The use of virtual worlds within the enterprise can be split into 4 areas.

Internal
With the world entering an oil crisis, travel is becoming more expensive. Enterprises can save money and leverage virtual worlds for conducting meetings and collaborative development. Inside the virtual world attendees can see and collaborate on documents, videos and presentations. Virtual worlds can be project based or simply places for employees to meet.

Often people wonder why virtual meetings are better than phone based conference calls. With virtual worlds, a participants actions are watched by the other people in the meeting, just as if they were sitting in the same room. This sense of being on display results in participants paying more attention. This is contrary to a conference call where the person could be in their office practicing their golf putting skills while still having one ear to the phone. Another advantage of meetings in virtual worlds is the ability to communicate with coworkers either before or after the official meeting. This is typically only found in face to face meetings and very rarely does it happen with conference calls.

External e-Commerce
Virtual worlds can used for immersive online shopping. While traditional Web based stores offer search capabilities virtual world based stores can offer similar functionality but more importantly they provide the ability to simply browse. A shopper can quickly skim through dozens of product images looking for just the right product compared with the more pedestrian next/previous page style of more traditional Web based stores.

External Business to Business
Businesses often use Web based forums to communicate with their business partners, resellers, distributors, etc. however, forums are not real time. Virtual worlds provide an more immediate access to the business partners and offer a stronger sense of presence and community.

External Business to Customer
In the mid nineties companies started to realize that the Web was going to be a powerful way to communicate with and market to their customer base. Virtual worlds provide a means of augmenting that communication, particularly when it comes to brand reinforcement and product awareness. A company can easily create an interesting, fun, and dynamic virtual world around their products.
